23. Tikorangi, The Jury Garden

A founding Garden of National Significance, Tikorangi traces
its beginnings to 1880 when pioneer Thomas Jury planted
the avenues of trees which give this large, landscape garden
its mature backbone. Home to the internationally renowned
Jury plant breeding family, the garden remains in private
ownership & is now in the hands of the fourth generation,
Mark & Abbie Jury.
Tikorangi is characterised by different
environments accommodating the huge plant collection, including
a sunny rock garden,
sunken garden, subtropical woodlands & park. This is
a garden that will appeal to all - it has plants in flower
all year but plantspeople will be particularly interested
in the depth of the plant collection.
With an extensive
nursery attached, plants for sale during Festival include
the Jury magnolias, vireyas, many different
hostas & fragrant rhododendrons. Cash or cheque only.
20 minutes drive from central New Plymouth.
Don’t
miss this year’s Festival workshop, Taming
the Wilderness, on the 2nd Saturday of the Festival.

24. Armstrong Garden
87 Princess St, Waitara
Alathea & Bill Armstrong
Located down a right of way, this half acre garden is a
riot of spring colour & scent. Alathea, the gardener,
is a plantswoman with a passion for the old fashioned style
of cottage garden, with large herbaceous borders, roses,
rhododendrons, perennials, annuals, shrubs & climbers.
A little bit arty with some surprises also includes a swimming
pool area surrounding an old villa style home. Plenty of
street parking.

Margaret Goble
Enjoying the warmest, sunniest position in Taranaki, Margaret’s
roses always bloom for the Festival & her garden is
full of colour & fragrance. As a Rosarian Margaret
takes pride in presenting her roses in peak condition.
However, her garden contains many other interesting plants.
Half an acre of flat easy walking just off the State Highway
north of Waitara. Good parking.

Magnolia Grove

Hidden in a small valley just off SH3, this garden
has been transformed from a paddock in four years.
Features include The NZ Raised Magnolia Collection,
a magnolia maze & a collection of large outdoor
cacti creating a desert-like experience. An array of
plants & trees enhance this diverse garden.

A large garden featuring a magnificent palm lined driveway,
spacious lawns & lake. New areas have been developed
including a water feature surrounded by tropical plantings.
The garden is also home to a flock of white doves, an exotic
bird aviary & tastefully chosen garden sculptures.
Located on the corner of Devon & Mountain Rds (SH 3 & 3A)
An eclectic collection of pristine classic cars are also

Two acres of romantic secluded gardens with manicured lawns
set off this luscious colourful garden.
Rosedale is a plantsmans paradise featuring a magnificent
rhododendron walk, tall beautiful maples and numerous camellias.
A large number of roses add colour and fragrance. Magnolias & other
unusual trees are under planted with numerous hostas & clivias.
The formal round white garden is a must to see as is the
woodland & river walks.
Rosedale also features New Zealand’s largest epiphyllum
collection with hundreds of varieties on display including
many of their own bred hybrids.
5 minutes from SH3a and SH3 with good bus access. After
the festival, open by appointment.
